Valdez began working within the realm of the Chicano theater in the 1960s alongside the movement for Chicano farm workers’ rights. Chicano theater was decreasing in the mid-20th century due to the trouble of having to adapt culturally to Anglo-American audiences with their bilingual scripts. This makes Valdez’s Zoot Suit a master piece of Chicano theater with its incorporation of not only the Spanish language, but Spanish music, Chicano folklore, and the tackling of major issues. The Pachuco helps show us the trouble with identity in the Chicano culture in 1970’s America, a topic still relevant today.
